Merlin didn’t stay to watch the aftermath of the battle. It was always the same anyway. The dead and dying being scooped up and carried off to tents. It was the same everywhere, every time. Once, he used to help, but now, he merely walked away when the fighting was done.
He was waiting for THE event, the one that would bring Arthur. But war after war and conflict after conflict arose, and Arthur didn’t. He wanted to hide somewhere and wait for the magic to summon him, but he couldn’t turn his back on mortals. He just couldn’t do it.
