Despite it being Gaius’s standard excuse, Merlin had never actually gone in the tavern to drink. In fact, he’d never consumed alcohol before. So when Arthur suggested mead at the tavern they’d ended up at, he was a little anxious. He’d heard about the effects of alcohol from his mother and Gaius, and wasn’t sure he wanted to experience that. He had no idea what might happen with his magic if he got drunk.
As it turned out, he really didn’t have to worry about it. Arthur being Arthur started a fight, which meant Merlin had gotten to drink very little in the end. But if Arthur hadn’t started that fight, they never would have met Gwaine, who ended up saving Arthur twice. Maybe someday Merlin would get to experience the more pleasant effects of alcohol, but it probably wasn’t going to be soon, since he did actually have no time to properly visit the tavern.
