Above him, birds were calling, joyous and new in the morning light. The noise of trees whispering to each other and the lake smoothing the shore should have made Merlin smile.

He wanted rain, a whirlwind howling, the detonation of a thousand lightning strikes, but the world went on, no matter the agony of a human heart and tears dripping one-by-one into the lake.

Arthur would never have a grave, never a tombstone, never someplace where he could be mourned. Instead, Arthur floated away into the mist, Merlin watching him disappear and wondering how he would survive the coming days.
