Candlelight flickered shadows across the room, images of smoke and mirrors, of past and future, of waiting, waiting. To guide the dead back to the living or so Merlin hoped.

It had become habit over the years, to light a candle on the day. Both memory and hope warring with despair.

As he watched, the flame wavered, darkening, then turning back into steady light. No wind whistled through the window, no door opened. Beyond the glass frosted with cold, fractals of ice glittering along its edges, a lake shimmered.

But no one came.

At dawn, Merlin blew the candle out.
