It was Arthur’s favourite sound.
At times, it came out as a chirp, a spontaneous peal of music, spirited and infectious. At other times, it was a warm rumble, almost like a purr, a throaty lilting ripple. There were times when it was downright explosive, a popping snort followed by a lingering titter, while other times it came as a puff of breath, soft and uncertain. There were times even when it was harsh and hollow, a hard bark with a bitter inflection.
There were also times – sometimes long stretches of time - when the sound was rarely heard and Arthur’s heart would truly ache then until the sound, in one of its varieties, returned.
Arthur would never tire of the sound of Merlin’s laugh. It made the king feel completely alive and Arthur intended to hold onto it forever.
