Morgana was feeling stressed after a long and frustrating day with Ellie. Luckily Merlin had come home in the nick of time before she called and demanded he come home. She sat down at their beat-up upright piano. She loved to play whenever she could, but it was hardly possible with a baby around.
She lifted the keyboard cover and pulled out the bench. As she sat down, she thought about what she would play. Then she stretched her fingers in anticipation and began to play.
As she got into the piece, the stress began to melt away. Her fingers moved up and down the keyboard in a timeless pattern she remembered from long ago.
Finally she came to the end and lifted her hands off the keyboard. It was then she heard the clapping behind her. She turned and found Merlin clapping and Ellie following his lead as best she could.
“How long have you been standing there?” she asked.
“Long enough to know that was brilliant,” he replied.
“It was a simple etude.”
“I didn’t know that. To me and Ellie it was the best thing we’ve heard in a long time.”
“Thank you.” She stood and walked over to them. She kissed Ellie on the cheek and said, “That’s the first time she’s ever clapped.”
“Really? That’s amazing.”
“So are you.” She kissed Merlin on the lips. “Thanks for giving me the time to play.”
“Of course. But you’re welcome to play more. Ellie and I are quite happy listening to your performance.”
“In that case, I’ll play more.” She turned and walked back to the piano, where she stayed, playing happily, for the next hour.
