Merlin just sat staring at nothing. All he could do was think and see was the day before. He, Arthur and Gwaine had gone to get some practice in at the range like they do every weekend. Merlin was trying to figure out how it happened! Why it happened! He couldn't figure it out. They’d been going there for months, least for Merlin it was months, Gwaine and Arthur always went weekends since they were legal, which was now six years. Walking in all they smelt was gunpowder and sweat. Putting on their goggles and headgear, loading the gun and aiming was second nature to them all now.
“Merlin?? How you doin’??” Percy asked worrying at Merlin’s state, “Merlin?? Can you hear me?? Merlin?? Come on mate, you can't stay like this forever!”
“Percy, let him be, he’s still in shock, we all are!” Gwen’s sweet voice sounded full of love and understanding at Merlin’s reaction to the tragedy while she entered the room. She sat down beside him and put her arms around him to let him know she was there for him. Though, she too needed the comfort as she was having flashbacks of her father.
“I know that, but damn it, he’s been this way since the hospital. If it wasn't for pinning his phone we wouldn't even know what happened. Like he rang me and didn't even speak one bloody word. Scared the hell outta me!” Percy’s voice was getting softer and softer as he spoke, feeling guilty for the words coming out.
They were all on their second clip, when Gwaine got distracted by a new member at the shooting range. Lance was his name, Gwaine had seen it on the sign in sheet and was anxious to see what he looked like and who he was. If he knew him from around town or nights out. Here he was, standing with the glare of Arthur’s perfect, somehow always shiny smooth hair blocking a good deal of Lances features, which is why he stepped backwards mid shot.
“Awh, hun, you’re sweating, I’ll get you a glass of water.” Gwen, ever the nurse.
“Where the hell is Gwaine anyway, he...” Percy was saying until he heard a noise. A growl of sorts coming from Merlin which stopped him short. He was glad of life in Merlin, even if it was near inaudible.
“Here you go Merlin.” Gwen said, and when Merlin didn't take the glass she put it on the table in front of him.
“O.K! I’m calling it. Time of death four thirty” was the only thing Merlin could really hear, everything else was just a background noise, like static when the T.V isn’t getting enough signal.
**Ping** **Thump**
“Merlin” Arthur said in a low, pain-ridden voice. Merlin looked to his right but didn't see Arthur until he looked down at a tugging on his jeans. He dropped to his knees beside Arthur, putting pressure on his stomach where there was blood coming through his tight T-shirt, not knowing what had happened. He tried to call for Gwaine who was in the other stall over chatting up Lance, who was the one the got Gwaine’s attention onto his friends. The colour drained from Gwaine's face in less then a second when he looked at his sheet to see that there were no bullet holes in it. He realized what the ‘ping’ noise was that had gotten him and Lance talking. He rushed over to them and was on the ground before blinking.
“Princess? I’m sorry!! I didn't know! I didn't mean...” Gwaine was in hysterics and tears started running down his face as it slowly sunk in what he had done. That he had been so careless after all these years. Lance was calling 911 and was told that three other people had already rang and an ambulance was already on its way and would be there in less then a minute. Gwaine took Arthur’s hand.
“Get away from him” Merlin half screeched, half shouted at Gwaine, both in shock but only Gwaine showing the full effects and passing out.
“O.K! I’m calling it. Time of death four thirty” Dr. Gaius said to his staff assisting him. He went to walk out of the room to find Merlin but found him standing at the doors instead. He dropped to his knees when Dr. Gaius explained that the bullet had entered at an upward angle, penetrated through his abdominal region, through his diaphragm, nicked his Aorta and that the blood was coming out faster then they could get it in and there was nothing more they could do for him. He explained the technicalities of what they’d done while Merlin just knelt there, almost catatonic. Gwen and Percy rushed in to hear the same as Merlin, only Merlin hadn't actually heard anything after “O.K! I’m calling it. Time of death four thirty”.
“Maybe we should put him up to bed. It’s gettin late and I can stay and make sure he’s alright through the night, you go be with Morgana?” Gwen said to Percy.
“No, she left for her business trip this morning. Think her plane landed half hour ago. I don't know how I’m gonna tell her her brothers gone. What about Leon? Will he mind you staying? Or is he gonna come over?” Percy was crying as he spoke and picked Merlin up off the couch.
“He won't be coming, he told me to stay as long as needed and that he’ll look after the kids” She tried to let out a smile but couldn't quite manage one in that moment looking at Merlin drooping in Percy’s arms.
They brought him up to bed. Gwen got in beside him to comfort him during the night if needed, while Percy sat on the chair in the corner of the room.
“O.K! I’m calling it. Time of death four thirty” Merlin finally said, not meaning to before he fell asleep.
PS: Didn't see tags for Gwen/Leon or Percy/Morgana
