Arthur has never been good with dates. So when Merlin walks into his office with his arms full of cake and balloons, Arthur panics.
“I- I didn’t- what’s the occasion?”
“Our Anniversary,” Merlin says, with a little smile on his face.
Arthur‘s face goes through a cycle of emotions. Horror to disbelief to horror again, and utter disappointment.
“But it can’t be. That’s my birthday, and my birthday’s in spring, and it isn’t-”
Merlin decides to let him out of his misery.
“Our six months Anniversary.”
Arthur’s face visibly loosens.
“That’s not an Anniversary,” Arthur complains, petulant, “it’s from the latin, anniversari, returning yearly. Six months doesn’t cut it.”
“I wanted to do something special for you. What would you call it? A sixmonthary?”
Arthur tips his head back and laughs.
“Note to self; never put you in charge of words.”
Merlin shakes his head at Arthur and leans in to kiss the laughter away.
“I love you,” he says, softly, like the truth of it might break Arthur.
Arthur takes off Merlin’s tie, careful, folding it up on his desk.
“I love you too,” he says, and covers it with a kiss, pulling Merlin to rest on the desk, pushing into him. Merlin struggles a little, just enough to put the cake down before pulling Arthur closer again by his shirt.
“Let’s go home for lunch,” he suggests, breathless. But Arthur has a better idea. He smirks, and Merlin leans back, to wait for him to say.
“No,” he tells Merlin, backing up to shut the blinds and lock the door, “Let’s stay here.”
Merlin laughs, almost nervous, and Arthur crowds him against the desk, comforting and dangerous, hips shifting against him, making Merlin’s jaw drop. It’s not long until he’s half naked and bent over the desk, gasping, Arthur biting into his shoulder while he tries not to come, not yet.
Later, Arthur patches him up, makes him look presentable again, and kisses his cheek. And Merlin remembers that he loves him, and he thinks his face will break from smiling.
