“Hello, I’m Arthur, I’ll be your server this evening. Can I get you anything to drink other than water?” Merlin looked up into the bluest eyes he’d ever seen. Eyes set in the prettiest face he’d ever seen. He couldn’t stop staring.
“I see you’re perusing the wine list. Would you like me to make a suggestion?” The young man continued, head tilting inquisitively, blond hair catching the light just so. He was acting as though Merlin wasn’t the biggest idiot he’d dealt with this evening. Merlin glanced back down at the menu, pointing to a pricey bottle of Merlot he remembered Gwen bringing to his house warming.
“Fine choice. Do you know what you’d like to eat or should I fetch your wine and give you a few more minutes?”
Merlin just shook his head and picked up the food menu, studying the offerings as though this was one of the most difficult decisions he’d ever make. He looked up to watch the waiter walk away. His trousers fit like a second skin. Merlin swallowed.
Arthur came back with the wine and poured Merlin a taste. Merlin gave him a nod and the waiter poured a generous glass and set the bottle down. “Ready to order or do you need some more time?”
Merlin looked up from the menu and his mind derailed again. “Go out with me,” he blurted. “You’re gorgeous. I’d like to take you out.” Merlin blinked. “Wait. Did I say that out loud?”
Arthur’s eyes widened like an anime character before he burst out laughing. “Wow. You sure did.”
Merlin could feel the blush burning to the tips of his ears. “Sorry,” he mumbled, eyes lowering to the menu again. “I’ll have the gnocchi.” He looked into the waiter’s sparkling eyes. “And some embarrassment and humiliation on the side.”
Arthur snorted. “Is that a large or small side?”
“I think it’s a super sized side.”
“I’ll get your entrée right out.” Sturdy fingers caressed the neck of the wine bottle and Arthur gave Merlin a small smile. “I’m off in half an hour, though. Why don’t you save me a glass of this and we’ll see what happens.”
Merlin saved him a glass.
