The shadows of the night stretched out before him, as Gwaine rode further from Camelot. The black darkness matched his gloomy mood. It had been a mistake to think this time it could be different. He shouldn't have trusted the warm feelings that came from having friends who cared, like Merlin and Gwen, and, yes, even Arthur. It was Merlin's enthusiasm that first had him thinking he could make a different life here. Such a caring, kind soul the boy had. And Merlin had convinced him to believe in Arthur. Despite being royalty, Arthur, turned out to be a decent bloke who stood up for Gwaine, pleading his case with the King. To no avail, however.
No, a satisfying life in Camelot wasn't something he could have. He certainly had proof enough that his life was only one of wandering, never settling down, never having real friends, never knowing what it meant to have a home. And so he moved on, heading for the next tavern, putting on his usual carefree, happy facade, and finding what little solace he could in drink.
