Merlin threw the papers on the table and rubbed his face. He was so tired. It had been a hopeless fight from the start. Merlin knew this. He is up against the Pendragons, with all their money and connections. Not to mention the nasty trump card of being blood relatives.
He was just a teacher who happened to be Morgana's next door neighbour, and had been a part of Mordred's life for the last six years.
Logically he had lost the minute they realized that the Pendragon line might not end with Arthur after all. It was foolish to even try. But Morgana had left Mordred in Merlin's care. Where she had gone was anyone's guess.
Merlin walked quietly into Mordred's room. He pulled the Lightning McQueen covers closer around the sleeping boy and put a gentle kiss on his forehead.
- Goodnight, Momo. I love you.
The boy drew his breath in his sleep.
- Love you too, Meme...
Merlin smiled. Momo and Meme.
Arthur may be Mordred's uncle. But Merlin was Mordred's dad, no one could tell this fool's heart otherwise. The Pendragons' were in for one hell of a fight.
