Arthur drew air slowly in and out through his nose. It was early and the air was crisp. His father would certainly highly disapprove at the hands-on approach, but he needed to know. He needed to see what it is that made that skinny man so special. He had spent most of the night reading the man's folder over and over. There was nothing there that explained anything. Merlin was plain. He was boring. Predictable. But it was him Morgana had chosen over Arthur. It was he who had gained her trust and he was the one she kept returning to. He was the one who got to see her son grow up, it was with him the boy stayed when Morgana was away.
He needed to find what the attraction was. Which is why he was now standing outside of Merlin's building, hidden in the shadows. The documents were stored on his smartphone for easy access should he need an address or a name.
He had dressed casually. Not his usual type of 'casual', which in his circles generally meant taking your jacket off and in extreme cases loosen your tie a little bit. But the kind that made him blend in as much as he could. Luckily for him the fall weather was on his side so he could wear both a cap and sunglasses without looking suspicious.
Merlin came out of the building with Mordred by his side. Arthur trailed them to the bus stop from across the street. They walked side by side, talking about something or another. Merlin talked with his whole body and each time his face was visible to Arthur there was a new expression there. Mordred looked up at Merlin, smiling.
Their bus stopped and blocked Arthur from view. Arthur ran across the road knowing they couldn't see him. There was something about this that excited him and made his senses tingle. Stalking his prey. He needed to know, he needed to soak up any bit of information he could. He followed them on the bus, then watched from afar as they stood outside Mordred's school, the boy hesitating a bit before he ran up the stair and into the building. Minutes before the bell rang, Arthur knew. Merlin stood silent for a moment before he started walking. Arthur followed. Merlin's was teaching in senior high, his school was a few blocks away. Merlin adjusted his scarf as he walked. He pulled out his phone and talked for a short while. He crossed the street at the zebra crossing, waiting for the green man despite little traffic. Bloody perfect. Surely this up tight behavior had to annoy the shit out of people?
Merlin's wine red duffel coat was easy to keep track of. Arthur kept his distance, glancing at his phone’s GPS. They were nearly at the school now. Merlin’s classes didn’t start until 10. Arthur rounded the corner, his head filled with Merlin's probable schedule of the day, and found nothing. Arthur glanced around cautiously. Crap! Where was he?
Turning around he found Merlin leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, staring right at him.
- Mister Pendragon. You and I need to have a talk.
