You don’t expect the crown to be this heavy.
Arthur makes sure you see it, hold it, even wear it in the days leading up to the coronation. But that wasn’t anything compared to this. The minute he places it upon your head you feel the weight of it. You can feel the craftsman who took the days creating it decades ago. You can feel the Queen who this crown was originally created for. (You never met her, but you see her every time you look into your husband’s face.) You feel the weight of the previous Queen, who wanted this crown for her own selfish deeds. A woman you would have been proud to call your Queen years ago. You feel the weight of the court waiting for you to make a mistake, because commoners should never take a place on the thrown. You feel the weight of the kingdom, wanting to do right by them. Wanting to make sure they have a voice. Wanting to preserve Camelot for them. You feel the weight of your husband, and his forgiveness, if not yet total trust, and wanting to prove him right in making you his Queen.
The crown is heavy, and you know that it doesn’t matter if you actually have it upon your head or not anymore. It’s always going to be there, weighing down on you. And it is in this moment that you realize you wouldn’t want it any other way.
