The ground is white beneath his feet, in fact everything is white. The world sleeping underneath a thick blanket of snow and yet Merlin isn’t gloomy as he usually is when it snows. It’s Christmas, after all.
People are making their way down the streets in winter coats and scarfs and hats and Merlin is walking as one of them, watching the excited faces and friendly smiles. There’s warmth about Christmas that cuts right through the cold and melts your heart.
Merlin has always liked these few days of the year when he can walk through the crowds and not feel the disconnect he usually feels. On Christmases, his world fills up with color and it feels like he belongs somewhere other than to a world long lost, in the arms of someone who’s now believed to be a mere myth.
On Christmases, he can smile and feel it.
One day, Merlin is walking down a road and enjoying the colorfulness of the world. Despite the white blanket of snow, the world is filled with color: yellow and green and red and white. And when he gets a glimpse of golden hair, blue eyes and a red overcoat, and his heart skips a beat, he thinks (relived and ecstatic) that he won’t have to lose the colors again, after all.
