"I didn't ask to be brought here."
"Yes, but you should have."
Lancelot knew that first voice. It wasn't always friendly towards him, but it was that of a friend. He let his body relax even further when he heard the second. Merlin was a good man too.
"You don't get to tell me what to do." Arthur no longer whispered his frustration.
"Somebody has to tell you when you mess up. How that horrible responsibility fell to me, only cryptic dragons will ever know."
Lancelot opened his eyes slowly to the the voices of men that should not have been in his rooms this late at night. He was concerned for their well being. Were they ok?
"The reason you're the one at my side instead of another, is sleeping in that bed." Arthur didn't say it, but he thought it. Lancelot could see it on the King's face and so could Merlin.
"You're jealous of him still?" Merlin hesitated in his question.
Lancelot winced inwardly praying he wasn't the cause of any more pain for his King. The issues with Gwen were long enough ago that he hoped all was well for Arthur now with Merlin at his side.
"I'm King and you're mine! So No. I'm not jealous of anything he has."
"Wait a minute, why are you bringing me into this? Aren't you jealous of him with Gwen?"
"Of course not. Gwen is happy. That was all I ever wanted her to be. However you and he sharing a bed still pisses me off and he isn't going!"
"Keep your voice down!" Merlin kept a stifled choke of laughter from coming up. He didn't believe what he was about to say. "And for the love of... here I thought you hated him because of Gwen. and all this time you thought I and he...dollopheaded...We slept together but we didn't sleep together!"
Arthur folded his arms in front of himself. "Yes because that's so much more clear Merlin. Also now who's shouting?"
Merlin barely strained back something rather scathing. Odd that he was always so adorably sweet and innocent except when near Arthur.
Thankfully there was an awkward silence. Long enough for Lancelot to feel comfortable in saying, "You don't have to do anything for me. I live and die at the service of the King. I deserve nothing else."
Arthur sighed and rolled his eyes after balling his hands into fists. An additional huff of air left through his royal, highly held nose.
Lancelot felt guilty about the way this happened, but matters of the heart were unpredictable at best. True he had kissed the warlock a few times in comfort, but nothing that went beyond very innocent boundaries of friendship. Gwen however was another matter entirely.
Merlin put a hand on the King's shoulder, "Are you sure this anger isn't because of where he'll end up tonight?"
His Majesty rounded on Merlin slowly considering what was said.
"Did you add him to be sure that I was over her? Is this a test? Because if it is, you missed my point entirely." Arthur released the tension in his body and continued, "Send him, but if he ends up anywhere he shouldn't I will not be accountable for my actions."
There was no reason for Arthur to be so possessive about Merlin where Lancelot was concerned. That is unless...Maybe Arthur had seen the light touches and gentle kisses they shared long ago. Maybe he assumed the wrong thing? Merlin must have had the same idea because the sorcerer simply nodded with a curious expression on his face.
No. Lancelot couldn't let Arthur think this. He had to correct this misunderstanding.
A pure light of warmth blinded Lancelot before he could say anything else.
