This was awkward.
They sat in the library surrounded by Uther’s vast collection of books, math books opened on the table. Merlin looked all business as he turned pages and flipped through his note book. Arthur didn’t know what to do, but he was certain that one of them had to say something at some point. The sound of pages being turned seemed so loud. He hoped Merlin would say something first or else Arthur might blurt out that he missed Merlin’s smile, missed believing it was genuine. He couldn't understand why Morgana had recommended Merlin as a tutor after making sure Arthur knew Merlin didn’t like him. And Uther must have given him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
Arthur squirmed a bit, then decided on a much safer topic.
-Music?
Merlin barely glanced up.
-Sure.
He pulled out his laptop and connected it to the speakers.
“I figured it out, I figured it out from black and white.”
Merlin’s pencil stops and finally he looks up.
-Seriously? One direction? That is not music.
-Course it is!
Arthur joined in, slightly out of tune.
-Saw the mistakes of up and down. Meet in the middle.
Merlin huffed and rose from his seat.
-Give me that thing, I’ll show you music.
Arthur wrinkled his nose at Merlin’s choice.
-Mozart? How old are you?
-It’s food for your brain. You desperately need it. Get your books, apparently I am here to perform miracles and I haven’t got all day.
-Did they ever fight like us…
Merlin groaned, but there was a small smile on his lips. It wasn’t open, warm and sparkly as Arthur knew it could be. But it was a start.
