Merlin pulls up short, heart racing, eyes fixed on the man sorting books. Seeing this familiar, hated face has him in fight or flight mode even centuries removed from the acts that prompted the response. He holds back in the stacks, gathering himself for a moment before taking a seat at a battered table with a good view of the check out counter and settles in. There is a reason he’s been called here to this high school in Sunnydale. He just needs to wait for it to present itself.
Moments later, the library doors open and a pretty young blonde steps in, tentatively glancing around. Merlin tenses again, recognizing the well loved magical signature. This slight, pretty teenager is yet another version of Arthur, the man he has chased through time. Merlin’s destiny is a teenager in a mini skirt and chunky boots. He almost laughs.
Merlin had willed himself invisible so he eavesdrops to his heart’s content. He and Arthur usually cross paths when his King is older, reunion spurred by an imminent crisis. The librarian and the girl’s conversation shows the timing is different now because the crisis came early for this young woman.
Merlin will be protecting a Slayer who is already under the protection of the reincarnation of Uther Pendragon. Merlin’s going to high school. How the frilly heck is this going to work?
