Modern pop music poured out of the van’s speaker as Morgana turned up the radio. She and Gwen, who were both sitting up front, sang along to the lyrics of the current song. Merlin looked outside of the window, hoping for the landscape to start showing piles of sand.
The sky was especially blue that day with not a cloud in sight. Merlin admired the scenery of the States, which was where the small group of uni students, including Lance, Will, and Gwaine, decided to vacation during their spring break.
“Are we getting closer to the beach yet?” Merlin asked. The beach they had been visiting was in South Carolina at Isle of Palms.
Morgana looked at Merlin from the rear-view mirror, her eyes hardly distinguishable due to the tint of her sunglasses. “We’ve been there multiple times already, why are you in such a rush?”
“He wants to see his dream man running across the beach with all of the other lifeguards,” Will piped in.
Merlin scoffed, “No I don’t.”
“We’ve seen you make googly eyes at the lifeguard, mate,” Gwaine said with a swooning expression. Merlin tried to fight the heat the rose to his cheeks.
“We’re here, anyways,” Gwen said, unbuckling her seatbelt.
Everybody got out of the van and Merlin immediately felt a warm, salty breeze drift through the air. He could smell the ocean and was glad to be at the beach again—swimming was the only athletic activity that he would bother to do.
Once they unpacked the van, arms full of towels, a cooler or two, and the occasional book, the group made their way towards the beach after paying their fees. A spot was claimed and everybody dropped their stuff to admire the view, especially Merlin, who was busy admiring the way his lifeguard looked running on the beach, the sun kissing his perfectly tanned skin and the wind blowing his blond hair behind him.
Gwaine socked Merlin in the arm, “eyes focused on setting up our area, mate.”
