In Memoriam
Freya had a small object tied into her hair.
Merlin discovered it as he tidied her for her final journey. Gently he parted her dark locks to reveal a simple magic charm, the blackened silver likeness of an eye.
People in the villages would give such amulets to their little ones in the hope that the Goddess would watch over them and protect them.
He wondered why Freya had kept it. It clearly hadn't served its purpose.
Then he understood.
Her parents hadn't managed to keep her from harm more than she had been able to protect them in turn. But they had tried their best and given it their utmost. She had kept their gift charm in gratitude and in sorrowful memory of that unselfish love.
He looked down into Freya's peaceful face. In the end he hadn't been able to protect her either, but he had made her feel loved again. And in return he himself had been granted the euphoria and vast heartache of unconditional love.
He leaned in to kiss her pale, sweet brow.
His sorrow and his memories resembled hers now. He would keep her magic trinket in remembrance.
And he would treasure it always.
