Gaius watched the two young men from the door. It didn’t seem like Arthur realized he was there and he did not wish to intrude just yet. More than one illusion had shattered that day. One was Arthur’s illusion that he could soldier through this on his own and not hurt anyone. The other was Gaius’ illusion of being able to keep this situation secret.
Uther’s public outburst had not gone unnoticed. Mordred had showed Merlin the web version early in the morning and Gaius had been met with the paper addition in the newsstand by the entrance. But it was probably best to let one cat out of the bag a time. Strange though, he thought, how both he and the mysterious nature of magic had found Merlin to be a perfect match for Arthur. It allowed him to hope that he too was the right man for the job.
