Word Count: 410
Prompt: #8: burn
Author's Notes: In the same universe as Flour, water, yeast, and salt. I wanted to tell what happened to Arthur when he was younger. Expounding on the "oh, No" portion of the other drabble.
The tag marks of a good baker were few and far between. The tag being a bit of raised flesh from where a hot pan grazed skin it was never meant to touch. Emergency cooling gel was always at the ready. No scars would come into play unless it was more than a graze. Most of the time Merlin didn't even feel them when they happened. That was the odd thing about burns. The actual contact wasn't what hurt. It was the searing almost instant sting that came after that brief contact was made. A dull throb too, as blood rushed from all over his body to try to fix the damage and calm his nerves from the adrenaline induced "Shit that hurts" high.
It's days like this when he's laying next to Arthur and looking down at his sweet face that he wonders what it felt like for his husband. Wonders if it stung like the kinds Merlin got from sudden contact in the bakery. Unconsciously Merlin traced the not so faint raised patched of skin the grafting and plastic surgeon's couldn't fix. Merlin hated to think of the pain this man he loved suffered. Hated to think of that stupid accident all those years ago.
Arthur was peaking back at him through a half opened sleep lazy eye. He huffed and grumbled, "Mesmerized by my utter gorgeousness again?"
"Prat. You know I can't help but look at you. Not like you ever gave me a choice in the matter." Merlin kissed the place he had been touching.
His husband brushed some of the cobwebs from his slumbering mind before shooting back, "I gave you choices. You could stare at me openly, gape in awe stupidly, or sneak slide long glances over your shoulder. Not my fault you do all three, and usually at the same time."
"It is too your fault." Merlin kissed his lips with a soft chasteness before continuing. "You tease me shamelessly even now. I'm your husband and I love you. I don't need you make faces at me all the time through my windows."
Arthur smiled and wrapped Merlin up in strong arms, "Of course you do. The day I don't show up at that window to make you smile, I will have failed in my duties as a husband."
Merlin tossed a raised eyebrow in his always shockingly romantic husband's direction.
"What? I knew that at age 7. Geez MERlin, you are rather slow aren't you."
