Title:When No One’s There
Summary: Magic helps Merlin out with a boo boo.
Warnings: minor injury

Author's Notes: I'd consider this a somewhat sequel (or maybe prequel) to The Ghost of Your Lips. They're certainly in the same 'verse.
He was playing with fire again. That little candle flame spell he’d once shown to Freya. Merlin smiled as he remembered the wonder on her face when he’d made those little flames dance in the air. He loved magic like that. Simple, happy. Magic didn’t always have to be a tool or a distraction or—heaven forbid—a weapon. Sometimes it could just be pretty lights dancing about in the air.
Getting distracted while playing with fire, on the other hand, wasn’t very smart of him. Merlin hissed as one of the flames floated into his hand. When he looked down at the skin it was an angry red and stinging. Shit, he didn’t know anything about burns. Where was Gaius when you needed him?
But just as soon as he’d thought that and strange cool sensation flowed over his whole hand. Merlin blinked. He hadn’t done that. He resisted the urge to look around the room for errant sorcerers bent on helping people. Something was niggling him in the back of his mind. Almost like a tickle. A soft nudge of nothing against his side made him jump from his bed.
His room lit up gold and slowly faded. It was empty except for him. His brows scrunched together in confusion. Then the oddest thing happened. A distant tinkling laugh, almost like a child. Then an invisible hand was petting his hair and neck and the cheerful laughter seemed to surround him. Merlin breathed out a sigh of relief. It wasn’t an intruder. It was just his magic.
“Did you heal me? Was that what that was?”
Even as he said he felt faintly ridiculous for speaking to an empty room. He wondered if he even had to speak out loud for the magic to understand him. It had seemed to understand his pain just fine without him having to announce it. The brush of something more solid than air over his lips immediately erased any embarrassment he had. Magic was there, listening. Magic was always there for him.
1. Literally means "Reveal intruders".
