He'd promised Gwen, beautiful, forever-out-of-reach Gwen that he'd keep Arthur safe.
As he walked toward his own death, he knew that they would always think it was because of his love for Gwen that he'd sacrifice himself to destroy the Dorocha's gateway.
But it was so much more than that. He could accept Gwen's decision, much as it hurt every day to see her with Arthur, and live with the consequences.
But Merlin, Merlin was going to sacrifice himself for Arthur.
And Lancelot couldn't let him do that.
For friendship was love, too, and above all, Merlin was his friend.
