As the sounds of Star Trek faded from the telly and the last echoes of Picard's "Engage" turned into adverts, Merlin turned to Arthur. "So, your call. Picard or Kirk?"
Arthur shook his head, frowning a bit as he glared at Merlin. "I'm not going down that road."
Eager to watch old Trek episodes and gorge themselves sick on pizza and beer, it had been a fun evening. They'd laughed and yelled at the screen, made jokes about Picard needing to get that stick out of his arse, groaned when Kirk jumped yet another woman, alien or not.
Merlin and Arthur had been dancing around each other for months, going to conventions together, arguing the ins and outs of Trek and science fiction versus fantasy, banter between them coming so thick and fast that their friends had told them to just get a room.
Merlin was all for that – not that Arthur would know. He was oblivious to how Merlin felt and it was going to stay that way. He didn't want to ruin a perfectly good friendship and he was pretty sure Arthur would turn him down anyway. Arthur had told all his friends to bugger off whenever Merlin and rooms came up.
But tonight was different. Arthur was leaning in, smiling at him, loose limbs from all the beer they'd consumed. Not quite drunk but sweet all the same. It wasn't going anywhere but still, he could enjoy it while it lasted.
Reaching up, ruffling Merlin's hair, Arthur let his hand curl around Merlin's neck, pulling him close. Whispering in his ear, he said, "Besides, Spock is my favourite."
Heart thumping wildly, Merlin could still feel the heat of Arthur's skin as the git pulled back and let his hand fall away. He missed that hand – and the warmth.
Trying to make sense of what normally would have been a 'move', Merlin said, "Yes, I noticed you were getting all flustered when we watched Spock's mating habits on Vulcan."
A sudden grin brightened Arthur's face. He jostled closer, bumping one shoulder against Merlin's, heat radiating through his shirt, and then he turned, leaning in, half-trapping Merlin against the leather. "He reminds me of you. Mysterious, driven, magical."
It was maddening. If he didn't know better, he'd swear that Arthur wanted him. The intense stare, the way Arthur's mouth was working, wet and almost willing, it didn't add up.
Flushing, not moving away because what fool would do that with Arthur so close, with his free hand, Merlin reached up, wanting to touch Arthur but not daring, and tugged on his own ear. "It's not because of the ears, is it?"
"Maybe." Arthur's eyes followed the movement, turning dark as his gaze flicked to Merlin's face. "Besides, those cheekbones of Spock's were kicking right off the screen. Just like yours."
Merlin couldn't breathe. His heart was trying to crawl up his throat and the rest of him was thrumming with anticipation, especially the jean's restricted part of him which wonderfully, horribly, was getting harder with every squirming moment. As Arthur shifted closer, Merlin bit on his lip, then mumbled, "You like my cheekbones?"
Arthur's grin turned predatory. "That and the ears." Reaching out, one finger following the curve of Merlin's ear, followed by a gloriously wet tongue, there was no mistaking Arthur's intent. Merlin's gaze flicked down to see both of them on the same page, restricted jeans and circling movement that spoke of pleasures yet to come.
As Arthur reached down, his hand snaking under Merlin's shirt, branding him with hot skin and wild kisses, it would seem they both knew resistance was futile. Finally.
Breathing hard, Merlin reached up, cradled Arthur's face in his hands. "So it's exploring new worlds and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before."
Arthur laughed, then batting his hands away, found other uses for lips and fingers and skin. Falling into him, pushing him down onto the leather settee, heavy and wonderful against Merlin's body, Arthur's long length pushed into his. They spiralled up and up into ecstasy and beyond, riding the light, joy dancing among the stars.
And as they came down from that glorious high, the sounds of Star Trek swelling in the background, Merlin said, "So these are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise?"
"And a lot more, I hope." Arthur grinned at that, gave him another long kiss, then nuzzling against Merlin's throat, whispered into his skin, "For us. To live long and prosper."
And with that, it wasn't just joy dancing but his heart, and everything else as he snuggled back into Arthur's embrace. "Make it so."
