Arthur woke with a start, muzzily wondering what had roused him until he heard the babbling coming through the baby monitor. He blinked at the digital clock mocking him with a cheery red 3:20 AM. The same ungodly hour their four month old had been waking up every morning for the past two weeks.
He lay in bed for a few minutes hoping Scotty would be a dear and fall back to sleep. Instead, the babbling took on a more insistent tone, almost certainly the preamble to tears. Arthur hauled himself out of bed before the baby could wake Merlin, too.
He quietly slipped down the hall and into the nursery, blinking at their boy babbling at the stuffed monkey in his hand. Once he saw Arthur, though, he dropped the toy and reached for him with a delighted squeal.
“Hush, love, papa’s still sleeping. It’s still night time, you should be sleeping, too.” He lifted Scotty out of the crib and gave him a snuggle, checking if the baby needed changing before breakfast. Of course he did.
Arthur switched off the baby monitor and deftly wrestled the wriggling boy into a clean nappy and onesie before heading downstairs to put a bottle together. Scotty babbled merrily, patting at Arthur’s cheeks and grabbing little fistfuls of hair until he was distracted by the warm bottle at his lips.
He settled them in a kitchen chair as Scotty sucked the formula down, little hands cupping the bottle Arthur held, wispy blond hair glinting in the moonlight, tiny feet happily paddling at Arthur’s thighs. Arthur gazed into their son's trusting blue eyes and wondered how he’d ever gotten so lucky.
