Merlin rolled over, instinctively seeking out Arthur’s warmth in the early morning chill only to find himself alone in the big bed. He cracked an eye at the bedside clock. It was ridiculously early so for a moment he tried to settle back into sleep.
There was no reason for them both to be up with the baby but the insistent pull of a need for reassurance that everything was fine had Merlin levering off the bed and making his way downstairs toward the dimly lit kitchen.
“He gets this from you,” Arthur murmured as Merlin draped himself over his husband’s shoulders and kissed the top of Scotty’s head. “I was a genius sleeper. Eight or nine hours and then an afternoon nap,” he said to Scotty. “Doesn’t that sound nice?” Scotty just drank his bottle, eyes bright, one hand patting at Arthur’s.
Merlin yawned. “It sounds brilliant,” he agreed, unfolding himself from Arthur and putting together tea and toast. It was still dark outside but the window over the sink was ajar, letting in the scents of blooming jasmine and the roses his mum had planted as a housewarming present. Birds were already singing and he could just make out the neighbor’s tabby cat stalking across their lawn.
“Maybe we’ll all have a post breakfast nap,” Merlin said hopefully as Arthur put the empty bottle aside and lifted Scotty so they were eye to eye. The wide awake baby babbled and kicked his legs.
“Or maybe we’ll go for a post breakfast walk and show the little man all the spring flowers and stop at Boots to refill your allergy prescription and get more lube.” Merlin gave him an incredulous look and Arthur shot him a tired smile. “Hey, a bloke can dream.”
“I’m pretty much dreaming of a post breakfast nap,” Merlin said setting down Arthur’s tea and toast before taking Scotty to burp.
Arthur laughed, nodding in agreement but Boots was still on their to do list.
