I thought I'd take a look at my 18th post here at CD and write a follow up or something, and it was the final-but-not-final Momo chapter! So I'm taking the opportunity to write (yet another) piece in my Momo verse, adding a little something that's always been canon in my head but it's only been barely hinted at in 'ups and downs'.

Part 1: Momo
Part 2: Observation
Part 3: Revelation
Part 4: The Hunter
Part 5: The Thief
Part 6: Face to face
Part 7: Retreat and regroup
Part 8: To bare your soul or to sell it
Part 9: So here we are
Part 10: I go la la la
Part 11: Last chance.
Part 12: Arousing supsicion.
Part 13: Closing doors.
Part 14 (bonus1):
Arthur gets a phone call (14)
Part 15 (bonus2): </a>Ups and downs (Momo 15)

Merlin sighed with relief as he put the shopping bags on the floor of the elevator. Mordred reached out and pressed the button for their floor. There was still a faded mark of the sticker there, it rarely failed to make Merlin feel nostalgic.

Mordred started rummaging through them bags looking for the chocolate they had bought.

-We sure have a lot of food, Daddy. What do you think grandpa likes? He looks really strict in his pictures, wonder if he'll like his present. Perhaps he wants something else. He can just buy whatever he want's can't he?

Merlin wasn't usually nervous about Christmas preparations, but this year was different. Today was the 18th and he had pretty much everything in order.

What had he gotten himself into?

-Nico speaks Spanish! Did you know that? Miss Jenna tried to teach us some but I already knew how to say it. You said when I was little I didn't speak until you spoke a little Spanish to me, and it worked with Nico too. Do you learn that at teachers' school?

-Um... Yes, I suppose you can say that.

Morgana had confided years ago that Mordred would talk to just about anyone he met, using local words and words he had picked elsewhere, but had suddenly stopped talking after spending a few days at a English daycare before they moved here, a daycare that had been “filled with snobby, rude, posh people”, as she had put it. Morgana was not one for conflict resolving, she had taken him out of daycare immediately and moved as soon as she could. Though the pedagogue in him reeled at this, he was glad, because she had moved them here, to the flat next door to Merlin and into Merlin's life.

-Then Kara said that she had learned from Dora the explor'ah and that Dora was for babies, but I learned cause we lived in Spain for real.

-Yeah, you did. Help me with the bags, Mo?

-Ok! Then I said I had lived a lot of places with my mom, but Roy said I didn't have a mom and I was a liar and Kara and me got so mad, but miss Jenna said I had moved a lot when I was little. But she didn't know where, so can I show her the list we made too? Then she can tell Roy that he is a poop face-

-Mordred.

-He is! Kara thinks so too. I said we had made a photo album too, but I couldn't bring it 'cause it was wrapped already and he laughed! Maybe I can bring the photo album and wrap it back up for grandpa?

The stream of words took a break to wait for a reply. Merlin smiled to himself, his son looking at him with wide puppy dog eyes, a look designed to make anyone melt to a puddle of goo and lost resolve.

-We're not unwrapping any gifts to show it in class. But we can make the list.

The kids shoulders sank together and he moaned long suffering. The bag suddenly dragging on the floor rather than being held up.

-But Daaaaaddy, grandpa probably doesn't even like pictures, it's silly...

Merlin fumbled with the key and opened their door. He felt more confident all of a sudden.

-It's not silly. You'll see. It's the one thing he can't buy.

Mordred rolled his eyes.
-Oh please, did you learn that at teachers' school too?

Merlin threw his head back and laughed.
