Merlin learned to be grateful for the small things early on. And he knew to thank whatever God was watching over him when Time dropped him in a meadow and no one was around. Although he supposed that Time might be his God, in which case he couldn’t feel all that grateful because, well, Time was the asshole that had started dropping him in attack after attack. But that was too tiring to contemplate right now, and since when was Merlin so exhausted anyway?
He heard the sound of water nearby and smacked his lips. He was parched. His throat hurt and he would kill for even a drop. He’d killed for less. He’d killed for nothing.
Merlin soon found a river at the edge of the meadow. He crouched down next to it and scooped up as much water as he could with his trembling hands. At the first gulp of water his throat was sooted and he slumped down, unable to muster up the energy to drink more or move away from the river. He just lied down next to the water lapping at the grass, asleep even before he was completely horizontal.
