Merlin should have listened to his mother. She had told him again and again that he was not to try out new spells when he and Arthur were playing unsupervised. Spells were dangerous and not playthings.

But Arthur had said that Merlin wasn’t a real sorcerer because a real sorcerer wouldn’t need to make their beds by hand. And Merlin, hopped up on the soft drinks and sugary candies they had munched on all throughout the sleep over, had needed to show Arthur he was wrong. Merlin was a real sorcerer, and Arthur was just a cabbage head.

Now they were tangled together by the blankets.

“Merlin! Undo this right now!”

“I’m trying.”

“Try harder.”

“Just be quiet, I’m concentrating.”

“Great, maybe you can concentrate our way out of this. How brilliant of you Merlin!”

“You’re such a prat.”

“And you can’t even do a spell!”

“Like you would understand!”

“We’re going to die like this.”

“Can you move your arm?”

“My grave will say ‘Here Lies Arthur with Merlin because Merlin is the worst sorcerer ever’!”

“Oh yeah, well mine will say ‘Here lies Merlin with Arthur because Arthur crushed Merlin with his big fat head’!”

“My head isn’t fat. You’re fat!”

“You’re bigger than me!”

“If I could move my arm I would make you regret that.”

“Great, real great Arthur. That is just what I need to concentrate.”

“If we can get up and reach the door ...”

“Then we’ll be tangled together in the hallway.”

“Morgana might be able to undo the spell, she’s been studying her magic really hard.”

“Did ... you just compliment Morgana?”

“Shut up.”

“And you want to ask her for help?”

“Shut up!”

“Fine, all I’m saying is last night you said she was made of pure evil.”

“She is, but unlike some people, she might be able to help us.”

“Oi, I’m trying, but you keep digging your elbow into me!”

“I wouldn’t be digging my elbow into you if you hadn’t tied us together!”

“Right, like this whole thing is my fault.”

“It is your fault! You said the stupid spell!”

“You made me say it!”

“On the count of three, try to stand up, okay?”

“1, 2 ... 3!”

“We need to try again.”

“You’re laying on me and I can’t breathe!”

“Obviously you didn’t push back hard enough.”

“Get off me! Get off me! Get off me!”

“Fine! Jeez, you’re such a baby.”

“I count this time.”

“Right, because that was the problem last time: my counting.”

“1, 2, 3!”

“How are we supposed to get to the door?”

“We hop.”

“Like bunnies?”

“Yes, Merlin, like bunnies.”

“I don’t think this will work.”

“Stop being so pessimistic Merlin. My plans always work.”

“No they don’t.”

“Start hopping!”

“Well ... this is actually working ... maybe it wasn’t su-”

“Merlin get off me!”

“Now you know how it feels!”

“Oh that’s it.”

“Ow, Arthur! Get off.”

“Make me.”

“Boys?” Uther Pendragon stood at the door, looking down at Arthur and Merlin rolling around on the floor, tangled together by the blankets that were missing from the bed.

“Father!” Arthur squeaked. “We were ...”

Uther held out one hand to stop whatever Arthur had been trying to say, and pinched the bridge of his nose. He often did this when Merlin was visiting.

“I do not want to know,” Uther said, turning and leaving before the boys could ask for help.

“Why didn’t your dad not want to know?” Merlin asked, as they finally hopped their way to the door and made it out into the hallway.

“I don’t know,” Arthur shrugged. “He’s kind of being acting weird lately.”

“Okay, weirder. He kept asking if anyone else was going to be sleeping over with us and then started muttering that eleven was getting too old for sleepovers.”

“Is this like the time my parents phoned your parents when you gave me a ring for valentine’s day?”

“Parents are weird.”

“They really are.”
