“It’s just a blind date, Merlin,” Morgana said into her phone. She didn’t know how, but she was managing to make up her face and hold the phone to her head at the same time. Speakerphone might be a bit safer, but she was already in a groove and didn’t want to bother.
On the other end, Merlin’s anxiety ramped up a few notches. “But he could be an axe murderer for all you know.”
“True, or he might just be a perfectly nice guy that Gwen happens to work with.”
“You’re going to do it.”
“Of course I am. Between work and school, when do I get a chance to meet any nice men?”
“You didn’t just say that.”
“I meant, excluding you, of course.” She turned and got a good look at the clock. “Crap! I’m going to be late. See you in class, Merlin.”
“Bye Morgana.” He hung up and kept walking. He was actually on the way to class himself. Once there, he sat in the back where he, Morgana and Freya usually sat and waited for both girls to show.
A couple minutes later, Freya sashayed up and plonked herself down on Merlin’s right. “Morgana running late?”
“Mmm hmm,” he replied. He was still distracted by the fact that Morgana was actually going on the blind date with Gwen’s friend. Before he could delve too deeply into why it bothered him, Freya asked another question.
“What’s eating you?”
“Freya, if I asked you to go out with me, would you? Just as friends.”
“Now I know something’s bothering you.”
“Yeah, okay. When?”
“You’re lucky I don’t have any plans.”
“I know, that’s why I asked you.”
She punched him lightly in the arm. “You’re lucky I like you or that would’ve really hurt.” At that moment, they saw Morgana run into the classroom, with thirty seconds to spare.
“I’ll text you later, okay?”
Morgana slouched into the seat on Merlin’s left and class began. Her mouth was open, poised to speak, but she closed it and opened her notebook to take notes. Modern Lit was not a class to take lightly.
After class, she turned to Merlin and asked, “So you really think my date’s going to be an axe murderer?” They were all packing up their stuff to leave.
“Ooh, you have a date, Morgana?” Freya cooed. She gave Merlin a pointed look. He shook his head, silently telling her to leave it.
“Yeah! Gwen’s set me up with one of her friends from work. Tonight.” They walked out of the room.
Freya gave Merlin an even more pointed look and he shook his head frantically. “Do you know where?”
“Chez something or other. It’s down the street from where Gwen works, actually.”
“That sounds nice.” She glanced down at the phone in her hand. “Ugh, I’ve got to go. I have a meeting with my advisor in five. See you later guys.”
“Bye.” Merlin replied. He and Morgana waved. “C’mon, I’ll walk you to your next class.”
They were mostly silent all the way to the classroom, though Morgana darted secret looks at him now and then. He seemed distracted, judging by how quiet he was keeping. He usually talked enough for both of them.
She stopped a short distance from the door and pulled him against the wall, out of traffic. “Is something bothering you?”
“No, not really. Why?”
“You’re unusually quiet. You’re not still worried about my date, are you?”
“No. If he’s a friend of Gwen’s I’m sure he’s all right. Besides, I know you can take care of yourself.”
She punched his arm. “Of course I can.”
“Have fun then. And I want to hear all about it tomorrow morning.”
“Of course.” She leaned up to kiss his cheek. “Have a good day.”
