Gwen hovered at the edge of the room, hugging her upper body as she watched the other girls sort through the boxes. The laughter that had seemed like such a gift just a few minutes earlier now made her wish she could turn back time and never come to this stupid party in the first place.
“There it is!”
The shrieks of delight made the back of her eyes burn with unshed tears. This wasn’t what she’d wanted. She’d thought they were finally noticing her, but this wasn't the way she'd wanted it to happen. Never like this.
Vivian, the ringleader, scanned the room until she spotted her. “Come on! We need you!” When Gwen didn’t move right away, Vivian frowned. “What’re you waiting for? You’re not afraid, are you?”
No, she wasn’t, but they couldn’t ever understand.
When two of Vivian’s minions grabbed her arms and began to haul her to where they’d set up the Ouija board, she had no choice but to follow or else make a scene. Numb, she took the seat Vivian pointed out and swallowed down the bile rising in the back of her throat.
“What’s going on here?”
Morgana’s sharp tone cut through the laughter, but Vivian was foolish enough to ignore the warning. “We’re going to try and talk to Gwen’s father. Doesn’t that sound like fun?”
“No, it sounds like you’re a miserable cow who has no consideration for other people’s feelings.” Morgana marched over and scooped Gwen free. The arm she slipped around the back of Gwen's waist was comforting, but Gwen couldn't relax until Morgana gently led her toward the door with the declaration, “We're having our own party. Miserable cows are not welcome.”
