Bastet scales the chain link fence and jumps down onto a small patch of weeds. She sniffs the perimeter of the yard but finds nothing out of the ordinary before tucking herself in behind the blue wheelie bin that always smells faintly of mouse even though she’s never seen one here. It’s been days since she’d been able to sneak out to visit and she wriggles in anticipation.
She doesn’t have long to wait. The back door opens and her quarry comes into view, steaming mug in one hand, newspaper tucked under one arm. She narrows her eyes when the other man follows. Bastet likes it best when she has her man to herself but today is not one of those days.
“Looks like another brilliant day in paradise,” the interloper says, pulling out a chair. Her guy makes an approving noise. The hair on the back of Bastet’s neck bristles.
She slides out from behind the bin, silently sidling over the pea gravel and pavers, slipping under the table to sniff at their entwined ankles. One foot moves unexpectedly, bumping Bastet lightly on a back leg. She lashes out a paw in protest.
“Hey, girl, I didn’t see you under there,” says the blond.
She ignores him in favor of winding around her target’s legs, marking him with her scent. He reaches down to give her a rub between the ears and Bastet purrs her approval before jumping into his lap. She butts her head against his belly and he immediately rewards her with the firm pets he knows she likes best.
She rubs her face against his thigh. This human may wear the blond’s scent now but by the time Bastet is done with him every cat in the neighborhood will know he’s all hers.
