"Stop this!" Morgana yelled at them.
Arthur wasn't the one to interfere or say no to his Bethy, not when she was doing what she thought was right for the company, and Merlin had helped her plan the whole thing. No. It was not Arthur's or Merlin's place to stop their daughter's marriage. "He's a good man who will treat her well. Highly educated too."
"He's very nice Morgana." Merlin curled an arm of support over Arthur's hip.
"Nice has nothing to do with it! She's throwing away her life for added stability to the company. Even you wouldn't do that!"
Merlin continued with heavy heart and Arthur patted him reassuringly on his back. "While the marriage isn't my ideal for her. I talked with her the whole time while planning it. This IS what she wants. No one forced her, besides she's known Greg for years."
"Seeing him in passing at a few charity functions and exchanging company christmas cards does not count as dating. It doesn't even count as an acquaintance!" Morgana was in one of her more self-righteous moods and neither Merlin nor Arthur would get out of the bride's waiting rooms unscathed.
It was then that the hair and make-up people Bethy arranged for, released their precious little girl to her father's care
She was stunning and perfect. Arthur's heart hurt from the pride of such a wonderful girl getting married. Of course he and Merlin had tried to talk her out of it, told her that true love could be right there waiting for her, but she smiled and said that the only true love she had ever seen in any marriage was that of her father's and no one could bring her that kind of bliss so she would do what she could to help the people of Avalon Holdings. They all would be stable for centuries from the wedding that was taking place in mere minutes.
Merlin sighed heavily around Arthur's body. It would take more balloon animals than it did when Bethy went to college to get Merlin out of this mood. Maybe Arthur should have invested more in plastics.
"You're lovely." Merlin said with a small tear in his eye.
Arthur noted the time on the wall clock and the bustle of last minute friends and co-workers being shown their seats. Then he check his own watch and made sure the time was correct. It was.
5 minutes and their Bethy would be in a marriage of financial convenience. Arthur's stomach churned despite the large quantity of peptic medicine's that day.
A door slammed in the distance and Arthur finally had some hope of relief. If he wasn't mistaken that slam could only mean, Bethany's very own idiot had arrived to save the day.
Merlin and Bethy both knew it too. Only Morgana who still looked like she was about to spit nails hadn't realized what that banging door in an otherwise peaceful reception hall meant.
Arthur and Merlin both held shy smiles that Bethy turned on quickly.
"What did you two do?" Their daughter put her hands on her hips (ala Arthur in full tantrum), but the nervous biting of her bottom lip(so very much like Merlin) had already begun.
"We have done everything you asked and supported you in your decision to get married." Merlin almost sounded convinced of that.
Arthur wasn't as good a liar though and Bethy knew it. especially as she heard the tell tale footsteps getting closer to where they were. She backed herself to the door trying to keep it closed, as if the boogyman was going to come out of her closet like when she was 5 and Merlin had to chase it away.
Morgana smiled, finally picking up on the conspiracies of two father's in the room. She of course absolutely HAD to go check on the flowers at that moment and brushed her niece aside to open the door.
Bethy fell back into Arthur's arms because he would always be their to catch her when she fell. Or to bring back idiot superpants boys when he new his precious girl was making a mistake.
Merlin tilted the giraffe to the left then twirled it on his finger before letting it rest neatly next to the dog Arthur made him. The animals always made him smile and think of Excalibur upside down. His Arthur so uptight and proud, upside down. Merlin giggled.
"Bethy will be happy now?" He asked with hope. He knew the answer already after seeing her face meet Patrick's. 2 years apart and she still loved him and he still loved her. She had Arthur's pride though and wouldn't go back to him without some kind of grand intervention.
"Yes. Although she may not forgive us for being dramatic. Honestly we could have sent for him earlier."
"It's the romance of it." Merlin slung his leg across Arthur's body so he could straddle him while he talked. "Imagine him seeing her for the first time in years and looking her absolute best, about to marry someone else. Her seeing that look of desperate love and longing in his face. Is it any wonder they caved to temptations, and took off together without saying more than a few simple words of apology?" Merlin playfully kissed his husband on the cheek, complete with a smacking sound effect.
"Idiots." Arthur said hugging Merlin close.
