Morgana hates needing Gaius, certain Merlin has revealed her role in the attack on Camelot. Unfortunately, without the magic of her healing bracelet sleep will not come. She hesitates a moment before sweeping into his rooms.
“I need a sleeping draught. Make it enough to last the month,” she demands. “I don’t care to bother you again.”
Gaius approaches, strange glint in his eyes. “A sleeping draught? Guilty conscience keeping you up nights, milady?”
Morgana's back straightens but her voice trembles, “I’m the King’s ward. Do as I tell you.”
Gaius’s smile makes her skin crawl, “You play at being Uther’s loving ward. You play it so well you fool him but you don’t fool me. You would see Uther dead and Camelot destroyed.”
“Why would you say such a thing?” she whispers, shocked.
Gaius shrugs, “Because it’s the truth. There is evil in your heart,” his sure, icy voice chills her to the bone. He turns, moving to the small window looking over the courtyard. “And maybe I, too, am tired of watching our people burn.”
“Our people?” Morgana gasps.
“Those with magic,” he says peering back at her, eyes shining, “For the right price Uther will be dead by sunrise.”
Realization dawns and Morgana narrows her eyes, “Who are you?”
“Does it really matter?” asks the thing wearing Gaius’s face.
This time Morgana does not hesitate. “No it doesn’t.”
